Garden in Orchard Road in 2007
Open Gardens 2007

Over £5,000 was raised on Open Gardens Day on Sunday June 10th. This wonderful sum has been shared between Histon Feast, Emmaus UK and VSO, each charity receiving a cheque for £1,750.

More than 1,000 people visited the sixteen gardens open in Histon and Impington. Some gardens had nearly 600 visitors! They included people from other villages and other parts of the country, but it was primarily a great social and community occasion for local residents. The village was buzzing as people met up as they walked and cycled round the village, enjoying meeting friends and neighbours, including some, people said, they had not seen for years.

Thank you organisers. It has been a beautiful afternoon. Everyone so friendly and gardens are a joy.

Spectacular! Such a lot of wonderful colour. I'm now feeling inspired to do something with mine!

I loved your vegetable patch.

Beautiful and interesting gardens. Very good to have such a mix of size and styles.

Some gardens served lunches and teas, and all offered splendid hospitality and a chance for visitors to mingle and relax in a wide variety of interesting and often unseen or unknown gardens.

As well as the hard work of the owners in preparing their gardens in the months before the event, there were around 100 volunteers who helped to make the day such a success by helping to prepare and serve food, sell programmes, drive visitors around in the village mini-bus and many other errands. The day before the gardens opened there was a plant stall on Histon Green which was a huge success and raised a lot of money thanks to the generous help of so many in growing plants and manning the stall. On the Sunday over 1000 visitors saw some or all of the gardens.

It is hoped to make Open Gardens in Histon and Impington a biennial event - the next Open Gardens Day will be Sunday 14th June 2009.
