DAY 9 - FRIDAY
TAMPOPATA LODGE to LAKE SACHAVCAYOC and back
by boat and hiking
We didn't see a lot in the rainforest but we did see ... insects ...
... ant nests ...
... lots of fungi ...
... more ant nests ...
... lots more fungi (and Kelso has a photo of every one) ...
... lots of interesting trees ...
... vegetation ...
... plants and bridges ...
... and beetles ...
... more 'bridge' crossings ...
... fruit bats ...
and after 6km hike in the rainforest we got to Lake Sachavcayoc (Tapir Lake)
There are 2 birds in this photos 'prehistoric birds' we were told - don't know their real name. They were very colourful and about 3 feet high but a long way away so photo not great.
... dragonfly ....
Some of us went fishing and the rest of us went swimming with the piranhas. Honestly! Wayne caught one! Here it is! (thanks to Tracey)

The greatest excitement (short of Wayne's catch) being when a piranha jumped out and nearly went down Lynda's throat as she swam. We went swimming from the boat which Mercedes (local Peruvian guide) paddled into the middle. She later told us that was because the caimen (small crocodiles) hang out at the edge!
No - I didn't go swimming in my hiking boots!
Grace and Gemma enjoy our palm leaf wrapped lunch
Charlotte getting in some sleep before her next 'last night'
and Cyra
Phil trying not to be caught sleeping ... and still laughing
... and more fungi ...
... leaf cutter ants ...
... leaf cutter ants ...

more bridges on the way back to the boat
view from a bridge
... fungi ...
2.30pm: back to the boat
Wayne cracking Brazil nuts with a machete after a few beers - can hardly bear to watch!
3.45pm: cold beer is going down very nicely now after 12km walking
lots more rest and relaxation - Lynda and Charlotte
Tony and Cyra
the huts where we stayed
Heliconia flowers

The hut Lynda and I shared with Wayne and Phil!
We had a room per twosome but the roof is completely airy and communal so not a venue for romance!
4pm: inside our hut - not a spider in sight!
6.40pm: Not sure if this lot have moved for a few hours!
Caimen hunting at night from the boat - we did see a few but the photos are pretty hopeless!
